Since I first started this blog my boyfriend has been begging me to recreate all his favorite treats.. so I finally gave in and went with his BREAKFAST favorite ..... POP TARTS! For the filling I went with Grape Jam and A Super Easy brown Sugar maple Spread! Keep reading to find out more

Flour 2.5 cups

Butter, cold 2.5 sticks

Salt 1 Teaspoon

Sugar 1 Teaspoon

Cold Water 2-4 Tablespoons

To make the crust: first cut the butter into 1/2 inch cubes (approximate). It is important that your butter is cold otherwise your dough will not form properly. Next,  you need to combine dry ingredients with the butter. This step can be done many different ways- in a mixer, food processor, or even by hand. If you're using a mixer or food processor combine the dry ingredients and butter on medium speed until the butter turns to pea sized pieces. Like I mentioned before, this step can also be done by hand, just use your fingers to break apart the butter all throughout the flour. Next add COLD water 1 tablespoon at a time until dough forms. If your using a mixer or food processor the dough will form a ball, make sure to stop the machine as soon as the ball forms, so that the dough won't over mix.  If you're doing it by hand, stop adding water once the dough stays together, but the surface is not sticky or wet. Once the dough comes together, press it into a flat disk. Wrap the disc in plastic and place in the fridge for 2-4 hours (longer = better).

Once the dough has chilled, place it on a  floured surface and roll it out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut it into 3x5 inch rectangles. Next transfer the rectangles onto a greased or floured pan, spread around a teaspoon of filling on half of the rectangles. Finally place a second rectangle onto the rectangle with the filling and seal the edges with a fork. Brush the surface with egg wash (1 yolk + 1 tablespoon water) and bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Spread the glaze onto the "pop tarts" with a spoon after they have cooled slightly. I hope you guys enjoy this simple, delicious recreation as much as we did!

While the dough is chilling you should prepare your fillings. I tried two variations, the first one I did was a brown sugar and maple spread. This spread is super easy to throw together. Start with 2 tablespoons of softened butter, then add 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix together until it forms a smooth, spreadable mixture. For the second variation I used grape jam.

While they are baking you should make the glaze that goes on top. For the Maple and Brown Sugar "pop tarts" I used 1/4 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, and 1 teaspoon of maple syrup. Combine all three and mix until smooth.  For the grape ones I used 1/4 cup powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon milk. I added a little purple food coloring to show that they were grape, but that is optional.
